There are eleven recognised public holidays in New Zealand.

Public holidays that fall on a weekend over the Christmas and New Year period are generally carried over to the following Monday. This applies to employees who don't usually work at the weekend
Shops may be open on national public holidays, although there are trading restrictions on Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and ANZAC Day
