New Zealand's state health care system is available to all citizens and permanent residents. In this case a permanent resident is defined as someone with a current New Zealand Residence Permit who has lived in the country for at least two years, or has a Returning Resident's Visa. Individuals with a valid work permit are also eligible for public-funded health care, if they have lawfully been in the country for at least two years. The New Zealand government strongly advises those who are not eligible for public-funded health care to take out private health insurance.
Residents can choose their General Practitioner or medical centre. District Health Board websites have a list of doctors and medical centres in their area, including their consultation fees.
To register with a doctor an address, telephone number, proof of residency and the names and ages of all family members must be provided.
